Two-time Mr. Olympia winner Franco Columbu died recently, August 31, 2019, at the age of 78. He reportedly suffered a heart attack while swimming off the coast of Sardinia, where he was originally from.

Columbu was known for his extreme strength as one of the most powerful bodybuilders around. He was close friends with Arnold Schwarenegger, and together they formed a duo of that helped popularize the classic Gold’s Gym era which also made Joe Weider’s bodybuilding empire even more successful.

Franco won a controversial Olympia title in a comeback, yet he was a successful and popular champion. He wrote several books on training and became a chiropractor.

Franco will be missed as another luminary from bodybuilding’s classic era is now gone.
